In the 70’s and 80’s, a loose cannon detective by the name of Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood
) reeked havoc on the streets of San Francisco. Known as Dirty Harry, Detective Callahan was known to take justice into his own hands. The Dirty Harry series
of movies was extremely popular with the public. Of the five films, all but one of the movies’ musical scores were composed by Argentinean composer Lalo Schifrin
. However, when Schifrin was unavailable to composed the musical score of The Enforcer, the third film in the series, the job went to Jerry Fielding
, best known for his work on The Wild Bunch
, The Outlaw Josie Wales
, Escape from Alcatraz
, and McMillan and Wife
.
In The Enforcer, Dirty Harry is reluctantly partnered up with rookie Inspector Kate Moore (Tyne Daly
) as they hunt down a group of terrorists blackmailing the city. Like most Dirty Harry films, The Enforcer is fast-paced and action-packed. In his composition of the musical score for the film, Jerry Fielding used jazz music, beats and flares to accentuate the action and the drama.
The Main Title of the film starts off as a mysterious blend of strings and piano that spins into a wild mix strings and horns and culminates in a jazz combo very typical of 70’s action films. Fielding mixes his jazz style to reflect the mood of scenes throughout the film. Code Blue comes off as sensitive while Rooftop Chase is fast-paced. Tiffany’s Number Eleven is soft and sultry while The Shooting Nun is rather ominous.
While it is probably true that if the same movie were to be scored in the present day, the musical score would be vastly different, Fielding’s use of jazz was perfect for the genre at the time. The Enforcer Soundtrack is perfect for any jazz aficionado and would make a great addition to any soundtrack collection.
