M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, Lady in the Water, is a tale about an apartment manager who makes an unbelievable discover inside the apartment complex’s swimming pool. Cleveland Heep, portrayed by Paul Giamatti
, discovers a beautiful nymph (Bryce Dallas Howard
) has been hiding in the passageways beneath the pool, pursued by deadly creatures bent on destroying her. Heep and his fellow tenants, bestowed special powers by the nymph, soon discover that they have important roles to play in the completion of her mission.
James Newton Howard was chosen to compose the musical score of Lady in the Water. This comes as no surprise as Howard’s talents have been used to score four other Shyamalan
movies – The Sixth Sense
, Unbreakable
, Signs
, and The Village
. Each track containing musical score is hauntingly mysterious. Ranging between two to seven minutes long, each track weaves itself into the next, the listener not always certain where one track begins and the other ends. The listener is given the impression that they are being taken on a remarkable journey into the unknown. It’s not exactly an exciting journey – the musical score of Lady in the Water does not suggest that the movie will be filled with action, unlike the trailer – but one of mythological proportions.
In addition to the musical score composed by John Newton Howard
, the Lady in the Water soundtrack contains four songs written by Bob Dylan and performed a variety of singers. The Times They Are A Changin’, as performed by A Whisper in the Noise, is quite possibly the worst rendition of the folk song that this reviewer has ever heard. The song is drawn out and barely understandable as performed by the lead singer. A Whisper in the Noise
in this rendition turns out to be something more like A Mumble in the Noise. Amanda Ghost’s rendition of Every Grain of Sand is haunting in conformity with the rest of the musical score. But the most exciting Bob Dylan remakes come from the band Silvertide, who performs on two tracks in the album. Their rocking renditions of It Ain’t Me Babe and Maggie’s Farm are refreshingly new and enjoyable.
The soundtrack of Lady in the Water as a whole is an enjoyable addition to anyone’s soundtrack collection. The hauntingly mysterious classical music composed by James Newton Howard, combined with the folk songs of Bob Dylan
creates a mysterious blend which is often the case in a M. Night Shymalan film. One can hardly imagine the twist Shymalan has waiting for us at the end of this movie.
